A review from NPR for my new book 1973: ROCK AT THE CROSSROADS

November 18, 2019 · by solobeatles

The solo Beatles appear quite a bit in the book — as it was the year of Band on the Run, Mind Games, Living in the Material World, and Ringo.

Here’s a link to a review of the book from NPR:

At www.facebook.com/1973book I’ve got stories, videos and playlists. And please feel free to post your own!

1973: the year rock peaked, began to die, and was reborn.

It was the last blockbuster year where all the ‘60s giants released classics at the same time: the former Beatles, the Stones, Dylan, Zeppelin, Stevie Wonder, the Who, Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Neil Young, Elvis.

Five mid-level veterans shot to the front of the pack: Pink Floyd, Elton John, David Bowie, Joni Mitchell, and Bob Marley.

An amazing crop of new superstars released their debut albums: Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Queen, Aerosmith, the New York Dolls, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Tom Waits.

But when radio programmers created the Album Oriented Rock format for FM radio, the music began to homogenize, and whose who weren’t mainstream white rockers began to get squeezed out.

Under the radar, however, new movements started percolating that would eventually rise up to rejuvenate popular music: punk, disco, hip hop, reggae, techno, and outlaw country.

Thanks!

My Book “Where’s Ringo?” Is An Illustrated Beatles History

August 2, 2016 · by solobeatles

From Thunder Press, it’s a take off on Where’s Waldo with twenty double-page illustrations packed with Beatles trivia in which you have to find Ringo and other Beatles-related people and things, and fifty pages of text.

The artwork by Oliver Goddard, Takayo Akiyama, and David Ryan Robinson is beautiful, each with their own inimitable style: from childlike whimsy to outrageous psychedelia.

With the prose I did my best to cover all the bases from the boys’ early days in Liverpool to their final album, Abbey Road, all told from Ringo’s perspective.

I’ll Be On 2 Panels at the Fest For Beatles Fans in Los Angeles October 10-12

June 8, 2014 · by solobeatles

If you’re a Beatles fan in L.A. this weekend you can’t miss the Fest for Beatles Fans – it’s like Comic-con for Beatles maniacs!

On Saturday at 2 pm I’ll be talking about STILL THE GREATEST and solo Beatles music with Beatle experts/writers Tom Frangione, Jude Kessler, Steve Marinucci, Kit O’Toole, Wally Podrazik, and Robert Rodriguez.

And on Sunday at 6 pm Tom Frangione and I will look back at all the wild highlights of Ringo’s career both during and after the Beatles in a session promoting my new book WHERE’S RINGO?

I’ll also be part of the MEET THE AUTHORS event on Friday at 5:20.

Otherwise I will be at a table in the marketplace selling my books so stop by!

There are tons of special guests, including Denny Laine, Billy J. Kramer, and Peter Asher, and events going on all weekend. Not to mention an explosion of Beatle merchandise. The link to the schedule is below.

BREAKFAST WITH THE BEATLES’ Chris Carter will be broadcasting his show live Sunday morning from the Fest.

And I can’t wait to see Eddie Deezen introduce one of my favorite Beatles movies, I WANNA HOLD YOUR HAND, Saturday at 1 pm.

To see Eddie’s turn as “the greatest Beatles genius in the history of the universe!” check out this clip from Robert Zemeckis’ classic at 1:50 and 3:47.

I hope to see you!
